Reggio Emilia has 3 Foundational Steps

A Positive Image of a Child

What does this mean and how do we embody it?

In Reggio Emilia, the child is understood to be strong, competent, capable, full of resources and the constructor and co-constructor of their own knowledge and understanding.

Reggio educators believe that there is no such thing as a universal childhood. We are different, we all learn in different ways and our uniqueness is what lights up the world.

As Educators (and Nannies) we are lucky to witness a child’s interests, abilities and what makes them light up on a daily basis. From there, we build and create environments that provide exploration, curiosity and supports the child through their own freedom of expression. This teaches the child to trust their inner guidance, which then encourages a deep love to learn. To learn the things they want to learn.

At Happy Hearts “We believe that children have innate abilities from the very first moment they begin life” - This has always been our belief. But how do we embody this belief?

Create your own image. Reflecting is important. Take the time to think about what you believe about the children in your care, and then say it out loud, write it down, place it somewhere you can access it and see that your image of the children is what guides you.

When you have found your image make it come to life by creating an environment that supports it and most of all treasures it. Let it become your priority to embody the very thing that lights your child up.

The most important thing is to believe its true by reminding yourself, meditating on it and saying it to your child. These practices will enrich your life and the child’s life and will connect you on a greater level.

Overall, the Reggio Emilia Approach places the child at the centre of their own learning.
